FAMILY LAW
The practice of family law primarily includes divorce and custody cases. You will benefit from the advice and representation of an experienced, qualified attorney in many ways. Maine law considers a divorce to be the dissolution of a financial partnership and, in many cases, the fair resolution will be an equal division of assets and debts. Alimony, or spousal support, can be awarded to either spouse depending upon the length of the marriage and the respective employment, salaries, and educations of the spouses, among many other factors.
The children’s best interests are a prime concern of the the courts. A guardian ad litem may sometimes be appointed (at the expense of the parents) if special concerns exist for the welfare of a child (for example, when there is a substance abuse issue).
